## Admin: Category Bans
+ Category bans prevent a member from posting in all forums within a category.
A category ban stops a member from posting in every forum within a category. They can still read threads, but cannot create new threads or replies. They see a notice when they try.
+ ### Creating a ban
### Where bans are created
+ 1. Go to **Admin → Category Bans**.
+ 2. Click **New Ban**.
+ 3. Search for the member.
+ 4. Select the category.
+ 5. Set an optional expiry date and reason.
+ 6. Save.
You apply a category ban from the category's moderation tools, not from this panel. Open the category, pick the member, and choose one of three actions:
+ ### Effect
- **Ban**: a permanent category ban.
- **Suspend**: a timed ban, 1 to 365 days.
- **Shadow ban**: the member's posts are hidden from others but visible to them.
+ The banned member can still read threads but cannot create new threads or replies. They see a notice when they try.
A member-facing reason is required for a ban or suspension. Every category action also requires an internal moderator note.
+ ### Removing a ban
### Reviewing bans
+ Find the ban in the list and click **Remove**. Access is restored immediately.
Go to **Admin → Category Bans** for a roll-up of every category and its active bans. Click a category to see the full list of banned members, who applied each ban, the reason, and any expiry.
### Lifting a ban
Find the ban in the category's detail list and click **Lift**. Access is restored immediately.
